Art/Humanities Offerings at PSOM

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is proud to offer innovative arts and humanities programming throughout all four years of medical school. Medical arts and humanities electives both complement and build upon the standard curriculum. The list below captures our current roster; we are always looking to partner with students in finding new avenues to explore!

Culinary Medicine – an introductory and advanced course

Dance – Developing Clinical Skills through Dance

Theater – Theater, Improvisation, and Building Empathy (with the Lantern Theater Company)

Music – Humanism and Professionalism Through Music (with the Curtis Institute)

Narrative Medicine – Extreme Noticing; Exploring Illness Narratives

Visual Arts – The Art of Anatomy (drawing and other media); Art, Observation and Empathy (at the Philadelphia Museum of Art); museum-based resilience workshops; Drawing for Visual Communication

Museum seminars covering a variety of topics held at the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

Study abroad (summer) – An Arts and Humanities Immersion experience will be offered as a study abroad option during the summer following the first year of study at PSOM. This unique curriculum will explore topics in art history, visual arts, humanism in medicine, history of science, and Italian culture and language while students live in Florence, Italy.
